Re: Anyone here ever swam the channel?
It has everything to do with charity mate along with a lot of stuff I and my club do. I've done plenty of bucket collecting and standing on stalls at local fetes. I guess people shouldn't really run marathons for charity as people like to be able to see you. They definitely shouldn't shave their heads or sit Ina tub of baked beans because it is all about them!

You have serious issues mate if you are that against people raising money for special charities. You really sound like a bitter twisted old man.

“Look at me. Look at me. I’m swimming the Channel.”

Got fuck all to do with charity. And everything to do with fulfilling ones own ego. If you really want to swim 21 miles. Do it at your local pool. Get the community involved. If you’re that committed to raising money. People are more likely to give you cash if they feel like they can see you and cheer you on. There are hundreds. If not thousands of ways to raise money for charity.

A mate of mine was training last year to do it but fucked his shoulder. It's a fuckin big commitment, fuckin good luck to you.

Re: Anyone here ever swam the channel?
There was a good documentary about it on the BBC last year- following a few different people's attempts. Try and dig it out if you can. The following is what I remember form it, although i may have misremembered some and it could be accidental bullshit....

Basically it's a bit of an industry and there are a lot of things you have to do and hoops to jump through to be able to do it- you need to do it with a registered vessel as well to avoid the shipping lanes problem. Believe they end up doing it with groups of people sometimes.

I think there's a fairly strict time limit for various reasons but one is the tide. If you aren't on schedule and the tide turns, you're fucked and have to give up (as do a lot of people, even strong and healthy ones)

The weather also has to be suitable- you can't just rock up and do it on a given day- if the weather isn't right they won;t take you out. i think some people have to wait on standby for days before they are allowed to go if that's the case.

To put it into context, it's apparently pretty difficult to swim across the Thames once you're out past the docks/City airport, and that's nothing in comparison.

All that said- what an amazing feat it would be, and if you get the chance and are healthy and fit enough then it would be an incredible thing to do, and to say you've done. Especially for charity.

I just about a long distance swimmer who does exactly the same!

Thats his comparison shows his complete lack of knowledge of the Rules of the Road or even being in a situation where they are needed, so shouldnt really be spouting off about it using it as a stick to beat someone.

God knows what it has to do with you though...

'Guess you have never been across the channel in anything other than a P&O ferry.'

By sea? Neither have I. Neither has almost everybody. What's you're point? I'm genuinely struggling.

Re: Anyone here ever swam the channel?
As Scott_d says, it is mental toughness you need as the physical side is basically just down to training.
You need to have the will to train and know that it is a whole different game to swimming in a pool. You need to be strong mentally to know that this is an extreme endurance game, which will take hours to complete and its not like you can just stop for coffee halfway through. Whenever I do any endurance related sport like cycling 200 miles in one go, I have small task for myself to occupy my mind, and I know when to eat and when to drink even if I dont feel hungry or thirsty. If your muscles run out of "gas" you are fucked and even the pro atlethes can forget to eat and drink.
And a little quirkyness I have is that when it gets tough I start to solve math questions in my head to take my mind of the pain in the muscles.

I think Frankie did it in his lead-up to the marathon.

Re: Anyone here ever swam the channel?
Besides physically being very tough, there are quite a few hoops you need to jump through and people you need to satisfy to even get permission to cross the channel.

I would say go for it. If you have a basic level of fitness then the rest of the challenge will be mental. You probably know deep down whether you are capable.

I looked into it and I would love to achieve something like this, but I just couldn't be bothered with all the extra hassle and training when I've got lots of things I want to achieve in running first.

You may or may not be interested in the following West Ham connection to Channel swimming.

The first man to swim the English Channel in both directions (not on the same day - seven years apart in fact 1927 & 1934) was Edward Temme born Stratford Road Plaistow 1904. He also beat Captain Webb's then record time.

When my Old Man was West Ham Schools Swimming Champion Temme was his trainer

Would hope he was a Hammer, my Old Dad definitely was!

I fully expect that we’ll be told sometime that in fact when Willtell visits he always swims across.

Yet another one of his talents we don’t yet know about.
